Atlai Tavan Bogd National Park

Altai Mountain Range: A Natural Treasure The Altai Mountain Range, a breathtaking expanse of snow-capped peaks, rushing torrents, and glaciers, is a true natural treasure. Extending from the Russian border to the Altai-Gobi province in the south, this picturesque park begins at the western border, where the Mongolian Altai Mountain range spans Mongolia, China, and Russia.

Tavan Bogd: The Peaks of Five Saints Tavan Bogd, translating to "five Saints," derives its name from the five main peaks, each named after a saint. The highest peak, Huiten, stands at an impressive 4374m, marking the borders of Mongolia, China, and Russia. Nairamdal, meaning "friendship," is the second-highest peak, divided by three countries.

Diverse Landscape from Peaks to Valleys The park's landscape transitions from the majestic high peaks to lush green valleys. Encompassing this diverse terrain are three stunning lakes – Khoton Nuur, Khurgan Nuur, and Dayan Nuur. These lakes serve as the source of the Khovd Gol river, which eventually flows into Khar Us Nuur in the Khovd aimag (province).

Essential Information

Archaeological Riches in Mongolia's Altai Mountain Range

The Altai Mountain Range in Mongolia is a treasure trove of archaeological sites, providing a rich source of prehistoric fossils for over a century. Scientists believe that this region still holds undiscovered historical treasures dating back thousands of years, with evidence suggesting the presence of some of the world's earliest humans.

Ancient Artifacts and Petroglyphs

Within the national park, explorers can discover ancient remnants such as Balbal (Turkic stone statues), Buguun Chuluu (Deer-carved stones), ancient burial sites, tombs, and petroglyphs. The age of these artifacts spans from the 6th century, with some potentially dating back thirty thousand years.

Harmony Between Wildlife and Humans

The Altai region is not only a historical haven but also a place where wild and domestic animals coexist with humans. Mongolia boasts 7 times more horses and 30 times more sheep than its human population. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including Ibex, Argali sheep, marmots, wolves, foxes, and various bird species.

Nomadic Life and Unique Cultures

During the summer season, nomadic communities such as the Kazakhs, Tuvan, and Urianhai peoples inhabit the heart of the park. These nomads, keeping their unique cultures intact, have lived here for thousands of years. Their hospitality is legendary, with nomad families welcoming visitors into their Gers (nomad tents) for tea and food. Traditional conversations allow both hosts and guests to connect on a personal level.

Breathtaking Landscape and Glacial Majesty

The Altai region is marked by stunning landscapes, featuring the highest peaks in the nation adorned with large glaciers, including the Potanii Glacier, the longest in Mongolia. The juxtaposition of this wild terrain and the warm hospitality of its people leaves an indelible impression on every visitor, making the Altai Mountain Range an unforgettable destination in Mongolia.
